Public Health Wales Microbiology Division provides medical microbiology services to a number of communities in Wales. It also hosts a range of national and UK reference and specialist units.
Currently all respiratory pathogen molecular testing is centralised in the Public Health Wales virology department in Cardiff. A year on year increase in numbers since 2009 culminated in the 2017/18 winter season in excess of 16000 respiratory samples received from across Wales have been received and tested in the department.
The season helped demonstrate the value of providing molecular testing for the full range of respiratory pathogens closer to the patient with successful pilot schemes targeting admissions units carried out in the Singleton, Wrexham and Cardiff sites.
Data from this season highlighted that although influenza was the driver for much of the testing, that other respiratory pathogens also played a role in the overall burden. By offering a full comprehensive test (that includes key pathogens other than influenza), using minimum sample manipulation and a rapid result there is improved patient flow and often a differential diagnosis when the influenza test is negative.
The aim of this tender is to support award a Reagent rental agreement to support the delivery of respiratory testing in acute care settings and alleviate Winter Pressures.
