Abstract

NGN introduced an Alcohol and Drug Misuse Policy and Procedure in 2012 which applies to all employees, contractors and agencies working on behalf of NGN. Northern Gas Networks require to put this contract in place to ensure that we are provided with a robust alcohol and drug testing process for pre-employment testing (both on NGN sites and at clinic locations across NGN’s network), random testing (on NGN sites) and with-cause testing (24/7 service, 365 days per year on NGN sites). NGN’s requirements are that a standard testing procedure is undertaken including an appropriate chain of custody. This involves an NGN employee signing a disclaimer, notifying the nurse of any medication being taken, testing for illegal drugs with a urine sample and an alcohol breath test. The chain of custody relates to the records kept on the sample through the entire process, to guarantee the integrity and identity of the specimen from collection to test results.
