Abstract

Introduction The Hafod Copperworks site at Landore, Swansea contains the largest surviving group of historic industrial buildings in South Wales. The site is currently owned by the City and County of Swansea and a section of the site is has been identified for a residential and commercial development. The historic buildings and the remaining site will be presented and explained to the public. In addition, a pontoon will be installed to encourage water leisure activities on the River Tawe. A vision document for the site is found here, and outlines the future development plans. There is a need for a comprehensive survey of the site identifying all elements of the historic use of the site and locating the sites, usage and probable survival of all of the buildings both extant and buried. This study should be in sufficient detail to determine the impacts of any proposed development scheme on the historical and archaeological resource and to present methodologies for future investigation of the site. Scope of the Work. The project design will include a clear statement of the scope of the evaluation and community archaeology. The archaeology of the survey area as a whole, in its wider local or regional context should be considered. Any remains of interest should be considered, whatever their date and this should include standing buildings, industrial remains, landscape features, etc. Evidence for previous use of the site that may have damaged or destroyed the archaeological resource, such as the clearance of foundations, construction of cellars and piled foundations, should also be sought along with any evidence of occupation prior to establishment of the industrial works. Whilst the work should concentrate on the assessment area (Figure 1) the archaeological resource outside should also be noted especially when features could extend inside the boundaries. The effect of the proposed development on monuments and their settings located outside the application area should also be considered.
