Abstract

The design and delivery of an evaluation excavation to run between 1 and 22 September 2021 at the National Trust owned Penplediau/Caerfai Promontory Fort, Pembrokeshire (NPRN: 305396, SAM PE294), through the production of a Written Scheme of Investigation. The purpose of the evaluation excavation is to characterise and date aspects of the monument and its immediate environs. This includes potential buried features situated at locations most at risk from coastal and terrestrial erosion and adverse vegetation growth. The evaluation excavation forms one component towards a new collaborative approach to conservation management at this unexcavated and under-researched and eroding coastal promontory fort by Cadw, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority (PCNPA), the National Trust (NT) and the CHERISH Project (Welsh partners: The Royal Commission and Aberystwyth University).
