Description of the goods or services required

AIW seeks to engage a Subcontractor to undertake the required works in South Wales, based on the NEC4 Engineering Construction Subcontract.

AIW is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Core Valley Lines (CVL) network on behalf of Transport for Wales (TfW) acting on behalf of the Welsh Government.

As part of the AIW responsibility to maintain this network, there is a requirement as agreed by TfW to repair and renew elements of the network. The works at Caerphilly Tunnel Shaft 1 is a renewal item required.

Caerphilly Tunnel was constructed between 1865 - 1870, is approximately 1780m long, and was bored through a heavily jointed geological sequence with joint orientation directing groundwater towards the tunnel. This has resulted in the degradation of the tunnel and shaft lining in particularly wet areas. Defects found to be present in the shaft include spalling, cracking and calcite deposits with some bulging.

Caerphilly Tunnel Shaft 1 is located at CAR 7m 04ch, OS Map Reference E 317290; N 185744, within NRW owned woodland.

AIW seek to procure a Design and Build Subcontractor through an NEC4 Option A Subcontract to complete the detailed design and carry out all works associated with addressing the current defects present within Caerphilly Tunnel Shaft 1.

The successful subcontractor will require verified ConstructionLine Gold and RISQS memberships, with works-specific RISQS RICCL coding in place (see codes required in Part 1 Instructions for Tenderers).
