Abstract

This project is a continuation of our existing programme to verify the data we report in the UK’s annual Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory through measurement of gases in the atmosphere.

Its primary output will be a comparison of the bottom-up figures we report in the inventory through top-down measurement. This will give us assurance on the inventory’s accuracy as well as helping to identify areas to improve it.

The programme should:

— provide evidence of differences between inventory and verification estimates, for consideration by the National Inventory Steering Committee (NISC) when agreeing inventory improvements,

— contribute to the UK and global evidence base on current atmospheric concentrations of GHGs.

The work will also continue to benefit the UK’s international reputation and enable us to continue to contribute our expertise to global work in the field.

The programme will:

— measure GHG concentrations,

— interpret atmospheric data to understand different trends,

— model GHG emissions from observed atmospheric data,

— provide analysis of differences between the data and observations,

— use observed and modelled data to support priority areas of government policy.
