Abstract

Urology is a speciality specifically identified by the Department of Health (DH) as being suitable for the relocation of a large proportion of work from secondary to primary care under the “Shifting Care Closer to Home” Policy. Urological problems are common and create a significant burden of work for primary care. The community urology service was commissioned to offer a single point of referral for all urology referrals for Gloucestershire patients. NHS Gloucestershire CCG (GCCG) has commissioned a community urology service to manage conditions that do not require specialist intervention at secondary level. This will enable improved patient flow through urology services and support the management of an increasing demand for acute services. The service will offer assessment and treatments under the care of a consultant-led team. It will also include the provision of minor surgical procedures. GCCG has awarded a new contract for an initial period of 3 years with option to extend for a further 2 year period.
