Abstract

Drilling two boreholes into the mine workings beneath the village of Caerau in the Upper Llynfi Valley in South Wales and undertaking test pumping of one borehole, with abstracted water returned to the second re-injection borehole. Description of Service: Bridgend Council are holding a pre procurement event to engage with suitably experienced contractors to discuss our requirements, contractor capability for the drilling and test pumping works. These boreholes are part of the investigation of the mine workings as a source of water for heat pumps to meet demands from a district heat network within the village. The main elements within the scope of works for two new boreholes to be drilled on waste ground owned by Bridgend Council in the northeast of the village near a pilot hole drilled in 2017. The works needed are summarised as : Drilling of 2 No borehole Undertake drilling of the overburden to approximately 30m; Install permanent 300mm steel casing through overburden; Drill 200mm diameter borehole vertically through the 300mm casing to a minimum depth of approximately 370m such that flooded mine workings are intercepted; Install permanent Boode casing to give a finished internal diameter of 150mm. Casing to be slotted at mine working; Provide gas control measures; Install grout as required to prevent ingress from aquifers that may be intercepted during the drilling operation; Provide and install a pump and all associated pipework so that a minimum flow of 11.6 l/hour (40m3/hour) is pumped from one borehole to second borehole. The event will take place on Thursday 26th November 2020 and will be facilitated virtually through Teams due to Covid19 restrictions. The event will allow contractors to book a slot to discuss the requirements in readiness for a tender exercise. There will be a maximum of 4 one hour slots available - 9.30am, 10.30am, 11.30am and 12.30pm. To book a slot please contact Judith.cook@bridgend.gov.uk
