RSPB Cymru is looking to appoint a contractor to supply peatland restoration services in and around the Lake Vyrnwy estate in accordance with the requirements outlined in this document. The tenders should fulfil the requirements of the brief outlined in this document.

Lake Vyrnwy’s blanket bog is currently in an ‘unfavourable declining’ condition as a result of historical drainage, erosion, peat cutting for fuel, inappropriate grazing practices and ongoing colonisation by non-native conifers and rhododendron from adjacent forestry plantations. Drainage in particular has had a devastating effect, effectively re-shaping the bog with major and long-term implications for water, carbon and biodiversity.

NRW is embarking on an ambitious programme to restore peatlands across Wales and funding is being made available for restoration work at Lake Vyrnwy including the removal of artificial drainage and reprofiling exposed peat hags in two separate areas: Allt Forgan and Cerniau.

Total quantity or scope of tender

The contractor will block drainage ditches and gullies and reprofile peat hags across blanket bogs at Cerniau and/or Allt Forgan.

It is anticipated that work will commence during the first quarter of 2021 but that further funding will be provided to continue and complete the restoration in subsequent years.

The contractor will be required to deliver the following outputs, completed in line with the requirements outline in the specification.

- Block all drainage ditches (over area to be agreed)

- Block all gullies (over area to be agreed)

- Reprofile all peat hags (over area to be agreed)

- Provide GPS records of work completed

- Work to all industry and H&S standards and best practice.

- Meet all requirements of NRW SSSI consents and Powys County Council Ordinary Watercourse consents.

- Make good any damage on completion of contract.

Separate contractors may be appointed for Cerniau and Allt Forgan and tenderers are invited to express any preference on the Form of Offer.

It is not expected that budget or time will be available to complete restoration of all these features, therefore your tender should be structured around likely rates of progress and cost of restoring these features per metre or km length.
