Abstract

This project is on behalf of a Welsh produce company that recently launched the first carbon neutral product of its kind and now wishes to commit to further environmental projects. The learnings from this project will work to directly strengthen the brand’s environmental credentials as well as having a broader halo impact on the wider company and other Welsh companies. To demonstrate the potential inherent in Welsh landscapes, we plan to develop a programme of work to examine decarbonisation and removal opportunities across our landscapes, covering both insetting and offsetting potential, as well as broader ecosystem services.

Description of the goods or services required:

This project is on behalf of a Welsh produce company that recently launched the first carbon neutral product of its kind and now wishes to commit to further environmental projects. The learnings from this project will work to directly strengthen the brand’s environmental credentials as well as having a broader halo impact on the wider company and other Welsh companies.

The UK food system will need to rapidly and significantly decarbonise in order to meet the UK government’s net zero commitments, and for major food businesses and retailers to meet their own targets.

Agricultural landscapes offer a unique opportunity to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and work is needed to reduce production emissions. Wales is particularly well placed to contribute to net zero goals, with its favourable climatic conditions and diverse land uses.

To demonstrate the potential inherent in Welsh landscapes, we plan to develop a programme of work to examine decarbonisation and removal opportunities across our landscapes, covering both insetting and offsetting potential, as well as broader ecosystem services.

The work will require:

-In-field soil carbon sequestration through the use of cover crops, including the potential for other low carbon inputs including Biochar and potentially enhanced rock weathering

- Restoration and enhancing field boundaries and non-productive areas in field, including agroforestry systems that have multiplicative effects

-Coastal ‘blue carbon,’ particularly looking at sea grasses

-R&D creating a local network whereby the brand and other Welsh F&D organisations have the opportunity to work together to understand and influence the management of the unique landscape Wales has to offer, to secure the supply and future of raw material, staff and protection of capital investments. Determine how working together can remove carbon to deliver net zero and how markets can be developed for carbon credits on an on-going basis.

-Exploring the potential for the first Welsh Carbon Off-set foundation

-Understanding of the technical, political, contractual, commercial considerations for growers, landowners, food brands, retail

Total quantity or scope of tender:

Time frame: 8 months
