Abstract

Rates of homelessness are increasing across the country and evidence shows that levels of provision for single people is declining nationally. Homeless Link published an Annual Review of Support for Single Homeless People in England in December 2021. This illustrated that the number of accommodation providers for single people experiencing homelessness decreased by 38.9% from 2010 and the number of bed spaces for this cohort dropped by 26.3% over the same period. 42.9% of accommodation providers reported that they were supporting an increasing number of people who were experiencing homelessness for the first time, including people in low paid jobs and those who had recently lost their jobs.

Supported accommodation provides an essential service for people who require more intensive support to overcome barriers and build the skills and resilience needed to lead an independent life. This type of service can come with 24-hour staffing support for people who are in crisis. Alternatively, support can be provided in homes in the community depending on the needs of the individual to prevent or relieve homelessness and rough sleeping.
