Minimum Standards for Playground Equipment Suppliers
1. Compliance With Safety Standards
A credible supplier must ensure all equipment and surfacing complies with:
BS EN 1176 – Safety standards for playground equipment
BS EN 1177 – Safety standards for playground impact-absorbing surfacing
These standards cover design, installation, testing, materials, and ongoing safety.
2. Certified Installation
Suppliers should provide:
Installation by RPII-certified (Register of Play Inspectors International) installers
A post-installation inspection option by an independent RPII Operational Inspector
Full installation documentation, including groundworks and foundation details
3. Materials & Durability Requirements
Equipment should meet minimum expectations such as:
Weather-resistant materials (e.g., galvanised steel, stainless fixings, treated timber, HDPE panels)
Rust and corrosion resistance
UV-resistant coatings
Anti-vandal design features
4. Safety Surfacing Requirements
Suppliers must provide:
Surfacing compliant with BS EN 1177 (e.g., wet pour, rubber mulch, tiles, bonded rubber)
Correct Critical Fall Height (CFH) ratings for each piece of equipment
Guaranteed drainage and edging systems
5. Documentation & Certification
At a minimum, the supplier should provide:
Product certificates for all equipment
Risk assessments and method statements (RAMS)
Maintenance manuals and inspection schedules
Warranty documentation (usually 10–20 years depending on materials)
6. Accessibility & Inclusivity
Equipment should meet inclusive design principles, including:
Accessible routes
A mix of play types for different abilities
Options for inclusive equipment (e.g., wheelchair-accessible swings, sensory panels)
7. Insurance & Professional Standards
Suppliers should hold:
Public liability insurance (typically £5–10 million)
Professional indemnity insurance
Evidence of relevant industry memberships (e.g., API – Association of Play Industries)
8. Aftercare & Maintenance Support
They must provide:
Maintenance support packages
Availability of spare parts
Defined inspection frequencies
Guidance on daily, weekly, and annual safety checks
