Abstract

NRW intends to award a contract for Tree Planting and one year landscape maintenance for a Community Woodland that will include the supply and planting of bare rooted and containerised plant stock (c.65500 No. plants) to c. 16 hectares of previously cultivated land. In addition, 4000 m² of clearance and cultivation of existing vegetation to facilitate further woodland planting. Grass seeding to all previously cultivated land. The contract will include one year aftercare of all planting and seeding works. The programme for these works will include for a series of community planting events (over 5 days through the extent of the contract) involving local schools and community groups. This will require the supply of plant material, tools and supervision by the contractor. It is anticipated that at least two of these events would be held at weekends. Works will commence within planting compartments, previously cultivated, ameliorated and fenced by the ground preparation contractor Walters UK Ltd. It is anticipated that planting compartments will be completed and subsequently released for planting working from south to north. There will be areas of retained vegetation within the cultivated compartments. These are to be retained and protected throughout the duration of the contract. Provisional sums for the supply and planting of orchard trees (c. 1.75 to 2m height feathered transplants) within two compartments should be included within the tender return. These will be subject to the results of soils testing undertaken by Walters UK Ltd. The site is located along the eastern slopes of Llynfi Valley and extends for approximately 2.25km parallel to the Maesteg town edge between Coegnant Road at its northern end and Ysgol Maesteg at its southern extent. It extends up slope for approximately 925m at its widest point. The centre of the site is located at approximate National Grid Reference as indicated on drawing CA10857/400 -100. The principle vehicle access is at the north end of the site, off a single track paved road, off Coegnant Road.
