Abstract

The Green Paper and the implementation of the MHSTS in North East Lincolnshire (NEL) aim to:

— fund 2 new MHSTS to provide extra capacity for early intervention and ongoing help within educational settings,

— reduce health inequalities and vulnerabilities of children and young people who are living within NEL’s most deprived wards,

— provide support earlier for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health and emotional well-being in educational settings,

— reduce stigma and normalise mental health and emotional well-being, whilst addressing the barriers for children and young people accessing support,

— transform support for children and young people’s mental health and emotional well-being,

— provide additional integrated support to ensure that children and young people can access appropriate support all year round.

Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTS) will support children and young people, providing extra capacity for early intervention support within school and college settings.

The Green Paper (2018) and the successful bid for the MHSTS will enable NEL to expand the current provision with the implementation of the teams for children and young people and offer support earlier to prevent mental health and emotional well-being issues escalating where a more intensive response would be required.

The 3 core elements that the MHSTS will provide are:

— deliver evidence based interventions for mild to moderate mental health and emotional well-being issues,

— support the designated senior mental health lead in each setting, and

— provide timely advice to school and college staff.
