Abstract

TEL is a privately owned technology development company exclusively developing an innovative tidal stream generator, known as DeltaStream. TEL has identified a demonstration test site at Ramsey Sound, Pembrokeshire and is in the process of obtaining the necessary consent licences to install a prototype DeltaStream device in 2011 for a 12 month test period.

TEL wishes to appoint a contractor for the design, manufacture and supply of the 3 gear hubs forming part of the prototype DeltaStream device. In each nacelle, for a rated transmission of 400kW, the rotating assembly consists of the input turbine with a rated speed of circa 10rpm (and maximum overspeed of 22rpm), the planetary gear hub speed increaser at a nominal ratio circa 16:1 (which is the subject of this Requirement), secondary gearbox (gear ratio circa 4.5:1), the high speed shaft line including coupling, and the electrical generator. The gear hub is thus a pivotal dependency in this mechanical system and TEL wishes to select a suitably rated component where system loads are similar to those expected in this marine environment. TEL invites response to this PQQ from companies who can demonstrate a pedigree and well-established track record of supplying product not necessarily in this direct environment (i.e. submerged, marine), but where rated loads, overload conditions and transient excursions have formed a major part in the product operational lifespan, to the point that product reliability is well-proven in service in harsh operating conditions. Such applications might be in the wind generation sector, or for example wheel hub drive mechanisms for very large vehicles. In these instances, a product readiness for ease of marinisation will form an important part of the tender selection process.
