Abstract

Newark and Sherwood District Council is proud to offer suitably qualified and experienced building contractors the opportunity to construct a new, flagship multi-million pound leisure centre in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

The Council has a long history of providing leisure facilities throughout the district, with its current offer comprising the Dukeries Leisure Centre in Ollerton, Blidworth Community Leisure Centre, Southwell Leisure Centre Trust and the Grove Leisure Centre in Newark. The centres are very well used with membership approaching 10 000.

Councillors collectively identified a replacement facility for the Grove as their number one capital priority, after 46 years of service by the centre to the people of Newark and its surroundings.

To be built on land adjacent to a proposed Sports Hub, the aim is to create a rich sports legacy for the future and enable people to access sporting opportunities and increase participation, as well as improving the health and well-being of local communities. The Council also sees the construction project as a means to stimulate the local economy, providing jobs opportunities directly and through the use of local suppliers and supply chains.

The circa 4 260 m² two-storey building will provide modern, high quality facilities for swimming, sports and fitness activities comprising of:

— 6 lane, 25 metre main swimming pool;

— 20 m teaching/learner pool;

— 243 m² fitness suite;

— 4 Court multi-use sports hall;

— 2 squash courts with moveable walls;

— Wet and dry male and female changing facilities;

— Vending area;

— Office/Reception area;

— Administration and Stores;

— Toilets, buggy-park, etc.;

— Staff, First Aid Room and Ancillary Areas;

— Plant Room and Pool Equipment Store;

— External works include below ground drainage, site landscaping, CCTV installation, vehicular access, car-parking and lighting.

Potential contractors must demonstrate their capability and experience in undertaking construction of a leisure centre with swimming pool facilities.

The design will be developed by the Council's appointed design team to RIBA stage E prior to letting the contract. The Client's Architect shall be novated to and appointed by the successful contractor. The Client's Structural/Civil Engineers and Service Engineers shall not be novated to the successful contractor.
