Abstract

Introduction — UK Power Networks has an obligation to survey its overhead power line networks. These inspections are an essential part of UK Power Networks' inspection and maintenance regime and are undertaken to identify safety issues and/or defects on overhead lines or vegetation in close proximity to the line and other risks in the surrounding areas.

The Service provided used satellite and LiDAR technology to produce 3D high resolution imagery of ground and vegetation spans and infringements of the Eastern Power Networks (EPN) and South Eastern Power Networks (SPN) areas.

From the analysis, highly specific cutting plans can be made to keep the network clear of vegetation at minimal cost.

Services provided under the contract include:

— Vegetation surveys — inspections carried out to determine vegetation issues in the vicinity of overhead lines;

— 3D Visualisation / Virtual World — allowing a desk-top site assessment to be made of the condition of vegetation intrusion throughout the network, and the need, or otherwise, for a shut-down;

— Line Profiling — providing accurate profile information on tower lines to enable increased loading on specific lines, or identifying the need for re-conductoring of heavily loaded circuits.
