This procurement is being conducted by Swansea Materials Research and Testing Ltd. (SMaRT). This commercial entity, wholly owned by Swansea University, was incorporated in 2009 to commercialise mechanical test activities developed under the Institute of Structural Materials. SMaRT is responsible for the maintenance and scheduling of all test equipment and act as “service provider” to a mix of commercial testing and University research contracts. The large portfolio of ISM research addresses the mechanical characterisation of structural metals and ceramics, with a rolling value of ISM research contracts in the order of 9M GBP. The most significant sponsor of this research is Rolls-Royce (with contributions to Rolls-Royce divisions in Germany, USA, Singapore as well as the UK). Additional research in similar fields is funded by Airbus and Timet. A large proportion of this combined funding is geared through the EPSRC and Innovate UK (including ATI funding).
