Abstract

Within the Royal Observatory Greenwich, is the Meridian Courtyard which is the outdoor public visitor space flanked by historic buildings and features; Flamsteed House, Meridian Building, Camera Obscura, the Astronomer’s Garden and viewing point over Greenwich. The Meridian Courtyard has suffered areas of ongoing settlement and surveys have discovered the possibility of remnants of buried structures or voids such as redundant basements and walls. An opportunity also exists to improve safe level access across the courtyard by improving the surface in a defined pathway. Accordingly, the client requires expert contractors to lift areas of paving, excavate and explore substrates, liaise with appointed archaeologists, address structures or defects found, reinstate the ground and lay salvaged and new York stone paving.
