Abstract

RSPB Cymru is looking to appoint a contractor to deliver works on the Lake Vyrnwy estate as part of an extensive ongoing programme of peatland restoration. The contractor will be working to raise water tables across blanket bog by blocking drainage ditches and gullies with peat or coir dams, enhancing previous restoration and reprofiling or tamping peat hags. Helfa Isaf (204ha) and Ffridd Cedig (25ha) are two bordering areas of blanket peatland with acid grassland and dry heath elements. Helfa Isaf featured extensive peatland restoration work during Winter 2021, whilst the majority of this work was successful, the site now requires some repair work and the blocking of draining/eroding features missed during the initial contract. Ffridd Cedig is smaller area adjacent to Helfa Isaf on the same ridge, previously fenced off for grazing control, the extent of blanket peat is smaller than that of Helfa Isaf, but contains ditches and peat cuts requiring restoration. Mynydd Newydd (34ha) contains a small amount peatland which has been extensively drained and is in extremely poor condition. Specific methods at Mynydd Newydd should be expected to vary based on the ability to work on the marginal peat. Bidder day to visit the site (mandatory) will be hosted 24/09/2025. Please email to register attendance.
