Abstract

The Bluefish Operation is €6.6 million Ireland Wales Territorial Co-operation Operation focusing cross border collaboration, climate change and community engagement. The operation aligns with Priority Axis 2 of the Ireland Wales 2014-2020 programme, Adaptation to Climate Change, under the theme ‘promoting climate change adaptation, risk prevention and management’ and the specific objective of increasing capacity and knowledge of climate change adaptation for the Irish Sea and coastal communities. A key goal for this Programme is to preserve and enhance the marine and coastal environment for the enjoyment of future generations in the face of the increasing impacts of climate change. This Priority will focus on the links between the impact of climate change on jobs and growth and will seek to respond to cross-border challenges on the Irish Sea and coastal communities due to the effects of climate change which have impacted on society, the economy, businesses and our shared ecosystem. Bluefish will develop knowledge and understanding of the environment of the Irish and Celtic Sea by working on some of the knowledge gaps in the effects and vulnerability of selected commercial fish and shellfish to predicted climate change. Through the transfer of knowledge, expertise and where possible best practice with respect to commercial fish, shellfish and aquaculture and through the strong marine science partnership of Bangor University, Aberystwyth University, Swansea University, University College Cork, the Marine Institute (MI) and Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), adaptation strategies will be produced. The operation will contribute to three indicators: Number of research institutions participating in cross-border, transnational or interregional research operations – 6 Number of new awareness raising initiatives targeting coastal communities – 10 Number of organisations cooperating in enhancing the marine and coastal environment - 10
