Abstract

Recycling and reuse of waste wood is a core requirement of UK and European waste directives, and although there may be divergence on certain aspects, a simple aim remains that, where possible, recycled wood should be used for products rather than energy production. To illustrate this, a critical issue for efficient reuse of waste wood is the identification of contaminants, which may be in the form of preservatives or paints (difficult to identify), or metal (easy to identify but costly to remove). Clearly identifying contaminated waste will allow more wood to be reused and reduce material sent to landfill. The Biocomposites centre is aiming to add additional capability to its already existing considerable expertise at BC to facilitate a range of analysis and advice options in one location. This will bridge the knowledge gap and identify RE-USE options (for structural products) to maximise the benefit to the circular economy. RECYCLING options will be supported and provided with increased capability to separate the classes of waste having intrinsic value. This contract is for the purchase of a Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometer.
