Abstract

The BioComposites Centre works on the development and material properties of a wide range of bio-based materials, including wood, biopolymers, natural fibre composites, novel insulation products, recycled materials, new materials from reclaimed timber and many more. The SEEC project (Smart Efficient Energy Centre) addresses renewable energy, energy efficiency of buildings and cyberinfrastructure. Within this project the BioComposites Centres is developing new technologies and materials for improved energy efficiency in buildings, sensor arrays for in situ monitoring of performance and hygric conditions, and energy efficient structures – both new built and retrofitted. This leads to a wide-ranging programme of materials testing and tests on assemblies for structural systems. The universal testing machine will play an instrumental role in this to support development work, monitoring and verification of predicted performance. Adaptability of the UTM is therefore essential, to allow a range of different material types to be tested using the range of appropriate sample modes and dimensions set out in standards, as well as permitting a broad range of multi-component assemblies, different assembly sizes and non-standard tests to be developed.
