Available ecological data and detail on survey requirements
Q1. Would it be possible to supply a list of the available ecological data and information already held by the Garden?
A1. The NBGW has a range of ecological surveys (many quite old, dating from when the Garden was being developed), which will be provided to the Ecological Consultant. These include:
- Bird, H., 1997. The National Botanic Garden of Wales. NVC Vegetation Classification Analysis
- CCW, 1998. Bat Survey of the Buildings within the National Botanic Garden of Wales Middleton Estate
- Crowden, J T., 1997. Middleton Hall. Badger Survey
- Crowden, J T., 1997. Middleton Hall. Preliminary Dormouse Habitat Survey
- Crowden, J T., 1997. Middleton Hall. Preliminary Amphibian and Reptile Survey
- Davies, K.L., 1997. Pteridophytes on the Middleton Estate
- Davies, T., and Starkey, N., 2009. Veteran and Notable Trees Survey
- Hotchkiss, A., 2008. Biodiversity of the NBGW and Waun Las National Nature Reserve (Note)
- Natur Cymru, Winter 2014. A sustainable future from a Regency past
- NBGW Sub-committee, 1997. Management of fields of high conservation and education value
- NBGW, 1999. Management Plan for Farm Woodland within the Habitat Agreement
- Orange, A., 1997. Lichen Survey for the National Botanic Garden of Wales
- Pryce, R & K., 2012. Ecological Input for a Round 1 Funding Application to the HLF
- Sclater, A., 1993. Middleton Hall, Llanarthne, Dyfed. Botanical, Horticultural and Environmental Assessment.
- Stirton, C., 1997. Identification of Pteridophytes and Bryophytes occurring at Middleton Hall.
- Welsh Wildlife Trust, 1996. Otter Habitat Survey
Q2. In the list of Ecological Services Required the brief asks for bryophyte, lichen and fungi sampling, and targeted invertebrate surveys. Could further information be supplied as to the level of survey effort expected for the sampling and what the invertebrate surveys would be targeting?
A2. The relevant sections from the draft specification (to be issued to tenderers_ read as follows:
Bryophyte, lichen and fungi sampling.
Sample and record bryophytes (mosses and liverworts), lichens and fungi, within Survey Zones 1 and 2. These have not been comprehensively surveyed in the past, although many records of significance have been made at the Middleton estate in recent years.
Working with the Garden’s Outreach Officer and other Garden staff, the Consultant Ecologist may be asked to manage the recording of bryophytes, lichen and fungi recording by Garden staff and/or suitable volunteers. The tenderer should identify any difference in fees if the work is undertaken solely by paid ecologists, or undertaken with the help of Garden staff and/or suitable volunteers.
Invertebrate survey.
Many invertebrate groups are represented on the Middleton estate. Surveys of the following groups are required:
- Butterflies
- Moths
- A targeted winter survey for Brown Hairstreak eggs in suitable habitat, working with a professionally led team of volunteers.
- General invertebrate surveys should be undertaken at least four times over the spring, summer and autumn periods.
The survey report should include a list of all species recorded with their mapped locations, together with a commentary on their significance, habitat requirements and recommendations for the conservation and enhancement of habitats to support and increase invertebrate diversity.
