Glynneath Block (G Block) sits at the heart of the Treforest campus, and is the home for much of the academic activity of the Faculty of Computing Engineering and Science. The University wishes to explore the feasibility of enhancing the facilities currently provided in G Block.
G block has a GIA of 11,180 sq m, spread over 7 floors:
Floor GIA (sq m) Current uses
Ground 674 Workshops, specialist space/labs, storage
First 2,855 Specialist space/labs, offices, workshops, storage
Second 3,408 Offices, lecture theatres, aircraft hangars, specialist spaces/labs
Third 850 Teaching rooms, storage
Fourth 848 Teaching rooms, computer labs
Fifth 848 Teaching rooms, computer labs
Sixth 846 Teaching rooms
Seventh 848 Offices (partly vacant, partly PHD students)
Current space utilisation levels in G Block (as is much of the University’s estate) are below the sector norm, with average utilisation of teaching spaces at 15%, and office space utilisation at 62%.
Within an enhanced G Block facility, the University would then move some additional activity from J Block (namely Computing, Mathematics and Electronics) into the building. The refurbishment of J Block does not form part of this feasibility study.
The ultimate aim of the University is to:
-To significantly enhance the quality of the buildings environment for teaching and research in Engineering, Computing, and Mathematics. The existing building stock is dated, and there is a clear opportunity to bring the facilities up to 21st century standards, to enhance student satisfaction
-Drive more effective space usage, with all of the academic activity of G Block and J (Johnstown) Block to be co-located under the roof of a reimagined G Block. This should include as a priority the design of flexible spaces for laboratory and practical teaching, which can be used across subjects and flexibly for different tasks.
-To co-locate the activities of the School of Computing and Mathematics, and the School of Engineering under one roof
To achieve this aim the first step is to complete a feasibility study, from which sound decisions can be made, prior to committing to progressing detailed design. The specific requirements of the feasibility study are:
1)Prepare a Schedule of Accommodation and space requirements, ensuring thorough consultation with end users. The Schedule of Accommodation should account for:
a. Different types of spaces required (e.g. specialist space, general purpose teaching space, office space)
b. Key adjacencies that enhance the performance of the Faculty
c. Space requirements (including allowances for building support services, circulation space and plant areas)
d. Specific requirements of specialist spaces, and standardised requirements for general purpose teaching spaces
2)Establish key design / project principles, vision including
a. Pedagogy / teaching style
b. ICT and AV
c. Sustainability (including EPC target)
d. Commonual space for learning
Note the principles should be informed by comparable case studies, and you should make an allowance for one day to visit case studies of your choosing with stakeholders
3)Based upon the Schedule of Accommodation provide indicative layouts, covering at least three options:
a. Reusing the existing building (G Block) to a high specification
b. Reusing the existing building (G Block) with a focus on value for money
c. Creating a new building to accommodate the activity
Layouts should also consider:
-Opportunities to better integrate the building with adjacencies in Treforest
-Opportunities to showcase activity through active frontages
4)For each of the layouts/options, prepare:
-Indicative costs for construction/refurbishment (including professional fees and fit-out)
-Indicative timescales through initial design, construction, and complete/handover
5)An integral part of the feasibility, in particular to inform the schedule of accommodation, will be consultation with key stakeholders. This consultation will focus upon staff within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science. Within your price you should allow for:
a. An initial presentation to all faculty staff at the start of the commission
b. Focussed meetings with each school within the Faculty to understand their future space needs
c. Discussions with academic staff, and key personnel within Estates & Facilities and IT to inform key design / project principles.
d. A presentation to all faculty staff at the end of the commission
e. A presentation to the Universities senior management team making recommendations at the end of the commission
