Abstract

Cardiff University, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences intends to purchase a complete integrated seabed mapping system. Cardiff University’s main research platform for coastal subtidal sampling is the 11m South Boats catamaran Research Vessel (RV) ‘Guiding Light’. The vessel has an onboard generator providing 240vAC as well as a 12vDC supply from the vessel’s batteries. We are seeking to replace our existing seabed mapping system (now at the end of its working life) with a system that will enable us to acquire high resolution bathymetry, normalised backscatter data sets and a range of other related parameters. The integrated mapping system will enable us to develop our research focus on marine renewables, coastal erosion, and hydrodynamics. It will also enable us to develop our undergraduate degree courses in aspects of hydrographic survey and marine geomatics. It is envisaged that the mapping systems will be used in coastal waters typically 5-100m water depth and occasionally up to 200m depth.
