Heritage Q&As
Heritage brief - questions and answers

1. The gazetteer of the conservation management plan to be reviewed and prioritised for action. The priority, is this something to be driven by their relevant significance/heritage merit/need or project deliverability?
It is a combination of significance merit and need. Would be useful to identify quick wins in terms of their deliverability within 5 years

2. What is it you actually want costing? Is this improvement works, refurbishment, consolidation works or interpretation?
What is required - refurbishment works and consolidation on a project by project basis driven by need. Not interpretation

3. How many properties/structures/monuments do you envisage being prioritised and surveyed for improvement and to what level of costing detail you want, given your limited budget?
A list id-ing as many as possible and looking at the project budget and outline work Dinas bran opening the gate house, the canal pump house, are currently the only specified projects The WHS Gazeteer identifies structures in poor condition … it would be worth starting with these – although it should be noted that a lot are on private land so no detailed surveys can take place at this stage. We would like a priority list drawing up from existing information from Cadw, Archwillio etc. which we can then id schemes to be taken forward to costing and greater detail

4. Do you have a map which shows/identifies the properties/sites/monuments to be reviewed within the respective geographical split area?
.
There is no map as such for the project area and the work should be focussed around SAM and Listed buildings

5. The project area as defined on the map at Appendix A and B is quite large and I am wondering if you have either a definition of "main built heritage features" or alternatively a list of the features you want considered?

See previous comments on question 3

Also does "built heritage" include archaeological sites such as motte and baileys?

Yes it does

With regard to "design and cost a list of works" is there guidance on the conservation philosophy adopted? (Ie if something is currently in ruinous condition would the list of works be to consolidate the structure or would it be to put a roof back on etc...) Is there a budget for carrying out these works as the size of that will influence the extent of the works that can usefully be designed and costed.

We would adopt Cadw's principals on this and reconsolidate but not to be rebuilt as a general principle

Heritage Q&As 2
Heritage Q&As 2
• Do you have a level of detail you are aiming for with regards the condition surveys? E.g. As GHEU standard QI survey's or much more in depth such as a full Schedule of Works?
To follow Cadw guidelines
• Does the condition survey include engineering structures such as Bridges and Aqueducts and would access be possible for these if so?
No – not the remit of this study, all major structures are taken care of by relevant authorities e.g. Canals & Rivers Trust.

• Would Cadwyn Clwyd be appointing a Quantity Surveyor for costing of the works?
No

extra question re:the gazetteer
The question re the gazetteer – the gazetteer did contain everything not just designated heritage features – however most of them may now be designated.
