Description of the goods or services required
Conwy County Borough Council wishes to appoint a suitable Supplier to deliver the construction of the new Conwy Cultural Centre on the outskirts of the town walls in Bodlondeb Park, Conwy, North Wales.
The contract period will be 15 months from January 2018.
The aim of this project is to create a new Cultural Centre of excellence for Conwy County, incorporating a community heritage and arts hub, local history point, archive, library, and youth centre at the heart of Conwy’s world heritage site. Through co-location, the Centre will improve access, interpretation, understanding and enjoyment of Conwy’s integrated heritage collections.
The project will re-unite heritage collections that are dispersed, at risk, or inaccessible, and will improve standards of storage and care. The centre will be a lifelong learning resource and cultural gateway, signposting locals and visitors to the County’s heritage and culture. Integration with youth services will enable new approaches connecting young people with heritage.
The proposed site is located on the corner of Bangor Road and Town Ditch Road, within the very attractive setting of Bodlondeb Park, and is currently occupied by the former Ysgol Bodlondeb building, which is now used as Conwy Youth Club. Preliminary discussions centred on retaining the existing building and forming an extension to provide the necessary space, however following a meeting with the Design Commission for Wales, the current proposal is to demolish the existing
building to create an iconic and contemporary building to compliment the world heritage setting and make best use of its location within the corner of the designed landscape of Bodlondeb Park.
Externally, the building is single storey in construction, however the archive store room and book store will be housed within an underground basement area, beneath the central library space.
To give suppliers an idea of the size and nature of the proposed scheme, architectural plan and 3D visualisation drawings are provided as attached to the advert.
