Abstract

The new centre will serve as a technological spring board and exemplar of integrated multi-tropic aquaculture (IMTA), thereby helping to increase sustainable finfish production, and opening new markets through the production of organic fish and high value micro-algae. Capitalizing on the University’s know-how and existing facilities at Swansea-CSAR, we propose to use the waste from farmed fish to grow micro-algae which will in turn purify the water. IMTA is a science-driven sector that specifically targets the circular economy and represents an area where Wales can expand its Aquaculture potential and increase its food security through innovation and collaboration. The new facility will serve as a test bed for commercial product development. It will deliver innovative solutions to economic barriers that currently hamper the development of multi-trophic aquaculture in Wales and the UK. The project will blend tried and tested technologies with innovation by incorporating micro-algal production into aquaculture systems to produce high value products. Further information is available within the tender documents.
