Abstract

The requirement exists for the purchase of a High resolution digital optical microscope with 3D imaging and surface topography measurement. We are currently growing capability associated with major grant investments in metallic coating development / assessment and the use of advanced manufacturing methods for alloy development. These encompass both rapid alloy prototyping and additive manufacture and a key need for this microscope is rapid characterisation of microstructures in terms of both 2D and 3D physical properties inclusive of grain size, porosity and surface roughness. Additionally, the 3D capability of the microscope will enable us to develop a step change in in situ corrosion monitoring at a microstructural scale, a technique that has been pioneered at Swansea University in 2D. This will provide brand new insight into the fundamental corrosion behaviour of metallic materials a key feature of new alloys and new manufacturing methods. The equipment will be delivered to the Pilot Manufacturing Research Centre (PMRC) in Baglan Bay.
