II.2.4) Description of the procurement
Semiconductor process development is a key area of growth at Swansea University, and is aligned with the Welsh Government’s ‘Innovation Wales’ strategy which identifies semiconductor materials and device technology as one of the foundations in the future expansion of the Welsh economy. The University’s new flagship Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM) aims to further stimulate growth in this area by delivering a bespoke, integrated facility for semiconductor research and technology development. The GBP90M project includes GBP60M co-investment from industry, together with a GBP30M grant from Research England and will allow construction of state-of-the-art cleanroom and laboratory space that will accommodate new fabrication and characterisation equipment (due for completion mid 2022). A key focus the CISM portfolio is the development of efficient, low loss power electronics based upon wide bandgap semiconductors such as SiC and GaN. Swansea University (CISM) together with its partners in the CS Connected Semiconductor Cluster were recently awarded GBP4.84M as part of the Driving the Electric Revolution (DER) Industrialisation Centres Equipment Request. Prior to the CISM facility being completed, the University seeks to procure specialist semiconductor processing and characterisation equipment of which the proposed Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Laser Annealing Tool is a major element. Furthermore, the WBG-LAT is a key component of the soon to be established (DER funded) Wide Bandgap Power Electronics Industrial Pilot Line to be located at Swansea University and its industrial partner Newport Wafer Fab.
