GMCA wishes to appoint a suitable qualified and experienced consultant to create a bilingual education resource pack which aligns to the new Welsh curriculum. The resource pack should consist of the following sections:
1. Overview of Gelligaer & Merthyr Common – What is common land, brief history, importance of it and why it should be respected, issues that are impacting the common, dos & don'ts, highlight the countryside code and how it can be used by schools and local out of school providers (scouts, DoE provider etc) for outdoor activities whilst respecting it. We see this as a pamphlet which can be used as a standalone document but can (with minor changes) also be incorporated into the main resource pack to provide context and used as an introduction to the pack.
2. Activity Pack (Primary Schools) – This pack should contain activities across all areas of learning and where possible be underpinned by cross-curricular skills of literacy, numeracy and digital competence which captures a variety ages groups. We would like to explore the option of creating a geo cache trail and relating this to the varied benefits the common provides; economic, agricultural, biodiversity, archaeological, cultural and recreational. The common is home to several protected species and we have plans for significant habitat improvement works such as tree and hedge planting. Can a ‘species champion’ or ‘adopt a species’ scheme or a Common Land Ambassador scheme for schools be created? We welcome thoughts from perspective consultants on ideas and successes they have had with creating past education resource packs.
During the development of the resource pack we would like the appointed consultant to collaborate with two local primary schools, one Welsh medium and one English medium.
We want this pack to be used and therefore see this collaboration as a key feature to make it something teachers want to use. The resource pack should also align to relevant Welsh Government policy such as The Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015, Environment (Wales) Act 2016 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
