Abstract

The BBNPA has been successful in obtaining Welsh Government Unfunded Pressures Funding of £10,000. The funding is to be used to appoint a contractor to undertake ground truthing of approximately 50 sample points across the unsurveyed portion of Mynydd Du. Contractors will utilise the original habitat types described in the 1997 Meithrin Mynydd Vegetation Survey (included in the supplemental information). Approximately 60-70% of these sample points will be within areas where know uncertainties in the data exist. The remaining points will be to validate other habitat types with which there is greater certainty. A map depicting the proposed transects and sample points is included in Supplement 3. A list of grid references for each of the sample points has been included in Supplement 4. Shapefiles for transects and sample points have been included with the supplemental information, along with a digital copy of the original report and original map. Project outputs We expect the successful contractor to: • Discuss the sampling design with us prior to initiating any field work, • Propose suggested alternatives, • Agree milestones and data formats as part of an (virtual or real) inception meeting, • Complete the ground truthing exercise, • Take photos and target notes at each location, • Compile the data, and • Produce a brief and concise summary report with associated shapefiles. Information supplied needs to include the series of points, the predicted or mapped habitat type and the actual habitat type. We expect photos and target notes to be taken at each sample location. We anticipate that the successful contractor will spend about a week or less on the initial desk top preparation and a week or less on the analysis and write-up; the bulk of the time should be invested in completing the field work. Please note that Mynydd Du is a very large geographic area and significant portions of the area are difficult to access, so sufficient time will need to be allotted to carry out the work. Some assistance may be available via the BBNPA Wardens with accessing points.
