Total quantity or scope of tender
This project is being procured by The University of South Wales (USW) to undertake the complete replacement and renewal of the existing roof including the installation of PV panel system. The works will be let using a JCT Intermediate Building Contract 2016, based on a traditional lump sum procurement methodology.
It is proposed that the existing interlocking tile roof on the Sport Centre building approximately 2,950m2, is replaced with a new built-up system, complete with new guttering, downpipes and roof lights over the main reception. These measures will help extend the useful life of the building for the next thirty years. The new roof will be compliant with modern building regulation standards, which will have the effect of reducing heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. As a result, the annual energy costs associated with heating and cooling the building will be reduced.
Four openings above the main hall ceiling will need to be provided to accommodate the mechanical ductwork. The M&E Engineer has designed the roof void to include some future proofing for any further sports hall upgrades, to contain ductwork, dampers, grilles and associated electrical/controls wiring.
The new roof will be designed to support the installation of a Solar PV array. The cost of utilities is increasing substantially, and carbon reduction targets are becoming more stringent. A solar PV array will help the Client reduce its utility costs and carbon levies whilst demonstrating USW’s commitment to reduce its environmental impact to staff and students. It will also help meet certain estates metrics through reducing utility consumption, cost and carbon emissions, as well as boosting the on-site electricity generation statistics. A 100kW system will be installed on the roof. The cost of installation should provide a payback period of under 10 years and provide enough power to meet the current building demands. Any additional electricity generated will be used to help power the remainder of the Treforest campus.
