Abstract

The Dental Postgraduate Section of Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) are looking for a training provider to provide quality training in Adult & Paediatric Basic Life Support & Management of Common Medical Emergencies to dental professionals based in NHS dental practices in Cardiff and Vale and Aneurin Bevan Local Health Boards. All NHS dental practices are inspected by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) and the inspection process is underpinned by national healthcare regulations and standards that set out the requirement of the training to ensure patient safety. All dental professionals are registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) and are expected to work to prescribed standards. The GDC stipulate that all registrants must follow the guidance on Medical Emergency training updates issued by the Resuscitation Council UK. The Resuscitation Council document ‘Quality Standards for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Practice and Training’ is its main medical guidance document for Dental Professionals that the GDC expects compliance with. In addition the GDC endorses the Resus Councils guidance that all clinical areas should have immediate access to an automated external defibrillator (AED). All staff must be appropriately trained and competent to meet the requirements set out above. The GDC sets out that all registered Dental Professionals should complete at least 2 hours a year every year of training in Medical Emergencies and basic life support, to maintain their registration. The successful training provider will report to the Dental Postgraduate Section of Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) at agreed intervals and to specified requirements.
