Abstract

The Institute of Life Science (ILS) is hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science (FMHLS) at Swansea University, bringing together academia, industry, the third sector and the NHS, co-located to deliver collaborative research innovation and impact. Established in 2007 and supported initially by European Regional Development Fund and Welsh Government, the ILS ecosystem has grown significantly to include advanced laboratories focussed on different research disciplines, desk-based research, and collision spaces to foster innovation, collaboration and aligned facilities. Aligned facilities include, but are not exclusive to, the Health & Wellbeing Academy that enables clinical service delivery experience to our student population to upskill and enhance employability. In addition to the AWEN Institute which provides a space to develop and demonstrate technologies and intervention for older adults, and our Joint Clinical Research Facility and Imaging Suites. Amongst our advanced facilities, infrastructure and leading academic expertise, the Institute of Life Science (ILS) houses business incubation facilities, with organisations benefiting from co-locating either through space rental, or hot-desking within this ecosystem. Following the implementation of new university wide faculty structures and influenced by the changing needs of business post pandemic, together with regional expansion plans for ILS, we are looking to commission work to review the following: • Current business incubation and support offering • Potential upcoming opportunities • Create recommendations to develop an integrated, streamlined, differentiated and mutually beneficial business incubation and support offering.
