Abstract

The National Botanic Garden of Wales has HLF and other funding to undertake the first (Development) stage of a project to restore a Regency waterpark within the parkland of the Middleton estate. The parkland is included in the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Historic Interest in Wales. The garden is seeking an archaeological contractor to undertake archaeological investigations of a number of locations within the restoration site, in order to evaluate known features, explore areas of archaeological potential and undertake watching briefs of engineering site investigations. The resulting information will inform the development of detailed conservation and restoration proposals and designs for lake dams, cascades, lake beds, and related features (paths, carriage drives, bridges and lost garden features, etc.) The excavation team must have relevant experience and qualifications to conduct fieldwork related to investigation and interpretation of historic parkland features, particularly those of the medieval to later periods. The Excavation Director should be a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. All excavations must be undertaken to CIfA standards and carried out in line with MAP2. It is anticipated that the excavations will be undertaken in two stages: first in mid-June - Sept 2015 and second in April 2016. The contractor will be required to involve volunteers in all suitable fieldwork.
