Abstract

This study will be carried out as part of the research programme from the Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST). It will examine public attitudes and behaviours towards climate change and decarbonisation policies in the areas of mobility, diet, material consumption and heating/cooling. The study will consist of an online questionnaire with two critical aspects: - International comparisons: to enable comparisons across different cultural contexts the survey will be carried out in four countries including Brazil, Sweden, China and the UK. - Tracking opinions over time (four waves): to examine how public attitudes and behaviours change over time the survey will be carried out four times in each country (once a year starting in 2020). The survey instrument will include a tracking element (questions that remain the same across all four survey waves) and a flexible component (questions newly designed for each wave). Questions may vary slightly across the four countries but the majority will be the same. The main task is the identification, recruitment, and online surveying of a representative sample of the populations in the UK, Sweden, China and Brazil, for their views and self-reported behaviours linked to climate change. For the UK, one additional survey will be required to get more in depth insights into successful engagement and communication strategies for the UK public. Please see ITT document, section 5, for further details.
