Abstract

NRW intend to award a contract for expert consultancy service to design and deliver scientific monitoring programme that will reliably and robustly evidence the impact of conservation land management actions within the New LIFE for Welsh Raised Bogs Projects on improving the conservation status and ecosystems service provision of seven lowland raised bog sites across Wales. The aim of the project is to improve the conservation status of: 694 ha of Active Lowland Raised Bog habitat; 276 ha of Degraded Lowland Raised Bog and Transition Mire and Quaking Bog habitat within the 7 raised bog Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) wholly in Wales. Lowland raised bog is amongst the rarest and most threatened habitats in the UK. Adverse hydrological regimes are the main factor, caused by past peat cutting and drainage which promote water loss. Drainage dries the peat allowing extensive scrub development and the spread of problem species with lack of, or poor grazing management is a further key issue. Peat forming (growing) raised bog is classified as Active Raised Bog and is a ‘Priority’ habitat; non-peat forming raised bog is classified as Degraded Raised Bog. These are distinguished on their vegetation composition. All raised bog SAC features in Wales are in unfavourable condition and their restoration is a priority for nature conservation

Description of the goods or services required
