Abstract

The Climate Smart Woodland in Wales project is seeking to identify and assess the range of policy levers that could move a broadly defined concept of increasing Welsh woodland cover towards the stated goal of achieving ‘climate-smart’ woodlands (CSW). Our primary objectives are a) to investigate and identify areas of Wales where establishing new woodland will provide significant benefits for climate change mitigation and net gains to other ecosystem services; and b) assess the realistic likelihood of transformation of land use or adaptation of existing farming systems to ‘climate smart’ woodland within these areas. This work would contribute to activity which would identify areas where new woodland planting will be feasible for the commercial forestry sector
