Abstract

Having sought to develop our race equality agenda for several years, the University of South Wales (USW) is now moving into a significantly new period of change with the publication of its USW 2030 strategy mission: Changing lives and our world for a better tomorrow: USW will be a leading UK university, maximising positive impact for our students, partners, and communities. Part of this change saw the University, on September 30th 2020, confirm its commitment to progress with the Advance HE Race Equality Charter. The decision was taken following significant feedback and consultation between members of the; University’s Executive Team, Equality & Diversity Steering Group (EDSG), and Race Religion Belief & Ethnicity sub-Group (RRBESG). Framed within the Advance HE Race Equality Charter‘s five fundamental guiding principles, and in line with the Welsh Government’s anti-racist action plan to tackle racialised inequity in its many intersecting facets. Since committing to moving towards an anti-racist University we have started decolonisation of our curriculum, created our first Race Equality Action Plan, developed a Race Equality Team composed of; Race Equality Champions, F/T Race Equality Project Manager and Senior Research Assistant (vacant), supported by the EDI Manager and EDI Advisor. Our Race Equality action plan is shaped by the following principles: • Anti-racist and thus anti-deficit, with a focus on systemic and holistic change • Race equity accountability and monitoring markers embedded at every level • Steered by meaningful dialogue, collaboration and co-production with the workforce and students • Intersectional by default and evidence-based by design A critical part of laying the foundation for this change is to create a consistent level of understanding, knowledge and awareness of what it means and takes to be a truly anti-racist University. Therefore, we are seeking to commission individual/s or organisation to deliver anti-racist awareness raising workshops to all our USW staff members. USW has approximately 2000 members of staff delivering both academic and professional services across our different sites: Newport, Cardiff, Treforest, Glyntaff, Sport Park (Pontypridd).

Description of the contract

Our Race Equality action plan is shaped by the following principles:

• Anti-racist and thus anti-deficit, with a focus on systemic and holistic change

• Race equity accountability and monitoring markers embedded at every level

• Steered by meaningful dialogue, collaboration and co-production with the workforce and students

• Intersectional by default and evidence-based by design

A critical part of laying the foundation for this change is to create a consistent level of understanding, knowledge and awareness of what it means and takes to be a truly anti-racist University.
