Abstract

The aim is to develop a sustainable medical 3D printing facility alongside existing resources for innovation to service a growing range of clinical and research applications for the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board hospitals. A key objective is the purchase of a 3D printer suitable for the following clinical applications: • Rapid prototyping of models for diagnostic and surgical planning • Production of rapid prototyping models for production of Facial and Body prostheses • Production of rapid prototyping models for cardiovascular/orthopaedic and Plastic surgery applications i.e. multi material compatible • Production of orthognathic surgical models and inter-maxillary surgical wafers. • Production of rapidly prototyped models for Facial trauma, assessment and repair The facility will support innovative clinical developments by providing complex objects printed directly from medical 3D image datasets. A high specification 3D printer is required to generate 3D models for pre-surgical planning in the following specialties: Maxillofacial, cardiovascular, ENT, Orthopaedics, Urology, Cardiology & Paediatric Cardiology, Plastic & Hand surgery. The 3D printer will be versatile so that it provides a wide range of options for use with materials of different properties and, preferably, different colours and flexibilities within the same model. The printer will also be used for rapid prototyping of non-surgical components designed by Clinical Engineering and external non-medical engineering consultants for component verification and validation.
