Abstract

In collaboration with our City Deal partners (Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, Pembrokeshire County Council, Carmarthenshire County Council) Swansea Council, as the Lead Authority, has been awarded funding to build and test the implementation of sensors in rural litter bins and communal domestic waste bins to reduce complaints and improve operational efficiency through undertaking an Alpha Project. The Alpha phase will test: • Improved customer satisfaction and user journeys • Implementing sensors in bins which give real-time information, so bins always have capacity for the user, especially in rural areas. • Ensuring bins are not overflowing with litter left around the bin • Reducing the need for the user to contact the Council or complain • Hypotheses and insights in the following ways: • Comparing ‘before and after’ data and analytics • Measuring customer requests for service and complaints Undertaking user-centred research As part of this project we intend to install sensors in bins of several sizes and different designs across the 4 Council areas. The majority of sensors will be installed in public litter bins, but we are also intending to install sensors in communal bins (like for a block of flats), and “igloo” bins which are communal recycling bins used for collecting glass. Therefore, we recognise it may be best to use different devices for different bins. We reserve the right to select more than one supplier in this instance.

Description of the goods or services required

In collaboration with our City Deal partners (Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, Pembrokeshire County Council, Carmarthenshire County Council) Swansea Council, as the Lead Authority, has been awarded funding to build and test the implementation of sensors in rural litter bins and communal domestic waste bins to reduce complaints and improve operational efficiency through undertaking an Alpha Project.

The Alpha phase will test:

• Improved customer satisfaction and user journeys

• Implementing sensors in bins which give real-time information, so bins always have capacity for the user, especially in rural areas.

• Ensuring bins are not overflowing with litter left around the bin

• Reducing the need for the user to contact the Council or complain

• Hypotheses and insights in the following ways:

• Comparing ‘before and after’ data and analytics

• Measuring customer requests for service and complaints

Undertaking user-centred research

As part of this project we intend to install sensors in bins of several sizes and different designs across the 4 Council areas.
