Description of the contract
The RSPB invites you to submit a tender for the following project:Partial demolition and build of the visitors centre and associated office space at RSPB South Stack Cliffs, Anglesey
The project includes:
• Demolition of two storey existing structures
• Construction of new two storey extension
• Improvements within the existing accommodation
• New drainage system and external works including package
• We would expect the building will be closed during the construction period. sewage treatment system incorporating a tertiary reedbed & drainage mound. For specifications please refer to drawings.
The existing two storey structure which houses the reserve offices, staff welfare facilities and public toilets at the RSPB South Stack Visitors Centre is reaching the end of its natural life. The building is no longer fit for purpose; is outdated and has numerous leaks and temporary repairs.
The work will entail partially demolishing the two-storey structure and part of the single-storey structure, replacing them with a purpose-built modern facility for the 21st Century
The new extension will be an elegant contemporary rectilinear building complemented by the minimal choice of materials and has been designed to reflect the local landscape. The new building, through ground-to-ceiling window panes, will further open-up the dramatic South Stack vista and showcase the natural beauty of the AONB.
The building design and visualisations have been prepared by architect firm Ymgynghoriaeth Gwynedd Consultancy (YGC) based in Caernarfon who have also been appointed as Principal Designer.
The site is located at RSPB Reserve South Stack Holyhead LL65 1YH. South Stack Cliffs are located on Holy Island in Anglesey, a wonderful nature reserve made up of heathland and farmland set on a stretch of dramatic sea cliffs.
Environmental considerations
The development sits with an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The building works will be adjacent to a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and a European Protected Site (SPA and SAC). The design for the sewage treatment works and associated tertiary system sit within the SSSI, SPA and SAC. The reserve is especially important for its rare breeding choughs.
As such, all precautions must be taken ensure protect land is not polluted or damaged by works undertaken on site. More details of which can be found with the outline CEMP, Environmental Impact Assessment Screening Report and Ecology Survey
