Abstract

Conwy County Borough Council (hereinafter referred to as the Client) required a study into flooding at Station Road Conwy. At this location, there used to be tidal flooding twice a day from a watercourse manhole in the centre of the northbound lane of the A546 during some spring tides to flood a section of highway in both directions, blocking access to a number of properties and impinging on private gardens and adversely impacting on the adjacent Dwr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW) Pumping Station. The flooding drains rapidly following each tidal event. There is a flap valve on the outfall that has been serviced and is said to be functioning correctly. Since the servicing of the flap valve, the regular tidal flooding has not recurred. It is concluded that in dry weather, the flap valve is effective if correctly maintained. However, its position in a concrete channel makes it prone to blockage and its location is accessed by walking 290m along the foreshore at low tide. Future maintenance of the valve cannot be guaranteed.
